American Eskimo Dog History
Despite the name, the American Eskimo Dog does not come from Alaska or Eskimo culture. They are descendants of German Spitz breeds brought to the U.S. by German immigrants in the 19th century. Their intelligence and agility made them popular performers in circuses, like the Bailey Circus, during World War II. Today the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes them as a breed.
Physical Characteristics and Temperament of the American Eskimo Dog
The American Eskimo Dog comes in three sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard so it’s a breed for dog lovers of all sizes. Its most notable feature is its double coat which is thick, fluffy and white and protects them in harsh weather. This white double coat gives the breed its lion like ruff around the neck.
Their eyes are brown and keen and alert, they look delicate but they have a compact muscular body that shows their strength and agility. Originally bred as companion dogs and performers in the Bailey Circus they are quick learners who love to show off.
They are social and eager to please. While they can be reserved to strangers they warm up quickly with proper early socialization. They are intelligent and easy to train and need an environment with plenty of mental and physical stimulation.
